Grimsby Expansion

About The Project

Groma has provided surveying services for the Grimsby corridor in Hamilton, ON (from West Harbour GO to Lake Avenue) between spring 2018 and summer 2019 in support of AECOM’s design for the Grimsby Expansion project.

The initial survey work consisted of full right-of-way topography.  After control was set and tied into municipal monuments, surveyors picked up top of rail data using total station equipment in addition to GPS carts, which allowed us to cover the full length of site very quickly.  The entire corridor was flown with an aerial drone (both photogrammetrical and LiDAR data capture methods), followed by supplemental conventional survey to pick up bridges, culverts and areas with thick vegetation.

The Red Hill Valley Parkway bridge was surveyed using stationary 3D laser scanning, which avoided the need for traffic protection, road occupancy permits and working overnight shifts.  The bridge over the CP ROW near Ottawa Street was scanned from the CN ROW since CP flagging was difficult to arrange.

In addition to topographic surveying, crew members measured all manholes and catch basins for invert elevations.  Where road traffic prevented safe work conditions, road protection crews were brought in, as well as a paid duty officer to provide traffic protection at signalized intersections.

The first submission consisted of an aerial DTM, with conventional survey data superimposed on top for highest accuracy.

Surveyors returned to site in 2019 to survey the asbuilt conditions near Centennial Parkway, including the bridge structure and completed grades on the corridor.
